We are a community group that welcomes local residents, university students and staff. Our aim is to build a stronger, safer and more stable community, while cutting back on carbon emissions due to waste by:

  • lending tools
  • educating community members on tool use and maintenance
  • empowering neighbours to maintain and improve their properties

We work closely with related projects co-located with us at the Kernel, St Andrews Botanics.

How to borrow tools

ToolShare works just like a library. We have over 100 items in our catalogue, from simple screwdrivers and hammers, to power tools, cooking and craft equipment. We continue to add to the selection – let us know if you think something is missing.

By becoming a member you can borrow tools and equipment instead of having to buy them. The suggested membership fee is £15 (pay what you can) or a donation of a usable tool. Once you have joined, you can borrow as many tools as you wish, for free.

You can join our library online or simply turn up to a ToolShare Loan session.

We must verify your identity before you can check out tools so please do this the first time you come to check out tools by bringing a photo ID and a bill with your address (less than 3 months old).

You can drop off and pick up your tools at the Kernel, St Andrews Botanics during ToolShare open hours (see Upcoming Events for the next ToolShare Loan session).

Other ways to get involved

We are looking for people to get involved in other ways too. You can simply donate tools or volunteer to help with tool maintenance and lending.
