Sustainable Spaces is one of Transition’s newest projects in St Andrews. Currently, we are in the process of creating the Kernel, a building made of shipping containers that will be situated in the Botanical Gardens. We are hoping to use it for skill-shares, socials, and more! Please feel free to come along to one of our landscaping sessions on Wednesdays, 12-3 pm, where we prepare the area for the shipping containers to be put in for a SUSTAINABLE HUB in St Andrews!
The Kernel aims to provide groups across St Andrews with a space where they can undertake practical projects that will contribute to reducing carbon emissions in the face of climate change. This could be waste reduction, upcycling refurbishment, food growing, and energy advice. It provides a place for group members to interact, share knowledge, skills and resources. Our plan is to create a workshop based on shipping containers that will provide a strong, secure and flexible space that can be modified, moved and re-purposed in the future if required. Currently planning permission is being sought for the siting of four containers within this space.
We’re aiming to make the outfitting of the Kernel as sustainable as possible, from the insulation to the furniture, so if you have any ideas or resources, or just want to help out, don’t hesitate to let one of us know, as we always welcome extra help.
