St Mary's Garden Session @ St Mary's (quad) Garden

Step into the Edible Campus garden at St Mary’s Quad, nestled behind the sixteenth-century St Mary’s College buildings, and step back through the centuries. The site was probably used to grow food in the middle ages, and there’s evidence a walled garden plot has existed there for at least the last five hundred years! In recognition of its unique character and history, we are attempting to develop the St Mary’s Quad garden with a medieval flavour. Rather than attempt to recreate a medieval garden (which would mean we couldn’t grow potatoes, tomatoes or courgettes!) we hope to develop a modern organic garden which incorporates some of the plants, growing techniques and features you might have found in the household vegetable plots of medieval St Andrews, or in the splendid gardens which would once have surrounded the St Andrews Cathedral Priory.
Find the garden behind the Divinity buildings, on the west side of St Mary’s Quad (right hand side as you enter from South St); enter through the gates by the bike racks. Garden sessions are Wednesday 12pm-1:30pm and Friday 2pm-3:30pm. Everyone is welcome regardless of gardening experience and interests. Come along and learn about medieval crop rotation – or just get stuck in! And there just might be cake on offer…
