BUSES

WHY TRAVEL BY BUS?

There are many reasons why travelling by bus is great. We have provided just a few:

  1. Taking the bus is a relatively cheap mode of travel, especially for longer journeys. You don’t need to worry about road tax, insurance, maintenance and MOT costs. Also, if you’re a regular commuter, can usually get discounted tickets for travelling frequently.
  2. You can take time to let your mind wander, rather than having to concentrate on the road ahead.
  3. You can go out for a night on the town or a trip to the pub without having to be the ‘designated driver’.
  4. You can be a planet superhero! One bus carries the same number of people as 30 cars and uses 10 times less space. It uses less fossil fuel, too. Why not find out just how many kettles you could boil through this handy travel carbon calculator.
  5. Save the hassle of heating up your windscreen and clearing off the ice in winter. It is also one less thing you need to worry about cleaning on the weekend.
  6. Make new friends! Taking the bus can foster a sense of community, especially for regular travellers. Say hello to that familiar face on the bus!

If this list isn’t enough to make you jump off your seat and onto the bus, here are even more!

BUS AND COACH TRAVEL INFORMATION

IN AND AROUND ST ANDREWS

St Andrews is easily accessible from across Scotland by bus. Most bus services arrive and depart from the bus station in the centre of town. When the ticket office within the bus station is closed, visitors should buy tickets for their service from the bus driver using cash.

STAGECOACH

Stagecoach operates the majority of the bus routes in East Scotland and over the UK. The Stagecoach website provides journey planners, timetables and the option to buy monthly or yearly Megariders (season tickets). These are surprisingly cheap; an East Scotland Megarider + allows unlimited travel on all Stagecoach services within Fife, Kinross, Clackmannanshire, Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk, Edinburgh City and Dundee, and costs only £28 for one whole week! See this map for the extent of this amazing deal!  Additionally, you can buy Uniriders online, which are cheaper unlimited tickets for students on certain routes. Note that student fares on buses are only valid if you leave Fife, and not on Dayriders.

Why not check out the Stagecoach East Scotland and Stagecoach UK Facebook pages for more information?

MOFFAT AND WILLIAMSON

Moffat and Williamson is another provider of bus travel in and around St Andrews. They provide a St Andrews town service (9B), and service many areas including Leuchars, Balmullo, Gauldry, Wormit, Newport, Dundee and Tayport through their 92, 92A & 92C services and 92, 92B and 92D services. They also service Madras College through their MD7, MD8, MD12, MD13 and MD14 services. Although they provide limited services in this area, they are usually cheaper than travelling with Stagecoach. At the time of writing, a single ticket from Leuchars railway station to St Andrews was almost £1 cheaper! Please see their website for further details.

As an aside, you can also hire a whole bus with Moffat and Williamson! Breakaway often use their buses to go on trips around the Scottish Highlands. If you have a large party of people needing to get from one place to another, why not send them an email. You might even end up here!

GO-FLEXI TAXIBUS

Go-Flexi is the flexible way of travelling around in rural North East Fife. Go-Flexi taxibuses cover large areas of rural North and East Fife. You just phone to book a journey and your fare will be similar to a bus fare. Anyone can use the services so why not ‘Go-Flexi’ for shopping trips, to catch a train, college trips or visiting friends? Great if you live just outside the bounds of St Andrews. See their website for further details.
